IBS
Symptoms & IBS Treatments
IBS or irritable bowel syndrome
is one of the most common ailments affecting 15%
of people in the United States, generally between
the ages of 25 and 45.
Often referred to as spastic
colon, spastic colitis, mucous colitis, IBS is
described a functional disease meaning that the
muscles of organs and/or the nerves are not working
properly.
Symptoms include abdominal cramps,
bloating, abdominal distention, diarrhea and constipation.
Some explanations for irritable
bowel syndrome are as follows: (1) the muscles
work too quickly not allowing time for food to
be absorbed leading to diarrhea; (2) the muscles
push waste too slowly causing too much moisture
to be absorbed leading to constipation; (3) the
muscle may spasm leading to sudden contractions
and cramps or bloating; and (4) the muscles in
the bowels stop working correctly leading to a
sudden urge to release that cannot be realized.
We carry a number of antispasmodic
medications to help with the treatment of iibs
symptoms If constipation is a problem, then increasing
fluids, fibres as well as the use of laxatives
is recommended.
